What’s A “Podcast” & How Do I Listen?

HAL: “I’m sorry Dave… I’m afraid I can’t do that.” DAVE BOWMAN: “What’s the problem?” HAL: “I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.”

Okay, folks.  Okay!!

We’ve been VERY lazy about getting a post like this on the site for those of you who would LOVE to listen to the Slightly Burned Pants Podcast but don’t know what a podcast is or, perhaps even more importantly, don’t know how to get it. Well, friends, all of that (and the excuses) stop NOW! Hooray!

What is a podcast?

The Smarty-Smart-Ass Answer:  A podcast is an online audio or video file, usually organized by release date, which you can either download, stream and/or subscribe to.

The Easier Answer:  It’s like a radio show or talk show or book-on-tape, etc., that you can download to your computer and then put on your iPod, cellphone, music player, or even burn to a CD if you want to.

What is the Slightly Burned Pants podcast?

The ONLY Answer:  It’s a weekly adult comedy show starring Michael Sullivan, Dwight Slappe and T. Michael Murdock.  There’s a new episode every Wednesday.  We tell stories, take on listener-requested topics and questions, make fun of each other and do our level-best to make you (and each other) laugh for about an hour every week.

Ok, Great! Now… how do I listen to the podcast?

The iTunes Answer:  If you already use iTunes for music, etc., then all you have to do is go over to the left hand side of your iTunes browser, under “Library” and click the “Podcasts” button to fun little tutorial.  That might help. If you don’t want to learn the ins and outs, just go to the iTunes store and type “Slightly Burned Pants” in the search bar on the top right, click on the result, and then when the page opens, click “Subscribe Free”.  You can also click on individual episodes by clicking “Get Song” or “Get All”.

When you do any of these things, you’ll get the pop-up for you to “purchase”, just like you would a song.  Don’t worry.  It’s still free.  But just like Amazon.Com, it takes you through the motions, as if you were buying it.  As soon as you click through it, the show will start downloading.  Let it download, then listen away, or put it on your iPod or iPhone, etc.  It will all be saved under that “Library” on the left side under “Podcasts” like we talked about before.  Bob’s your uncle.  We’re done.  Here’s another “How To” site, if you need further explanation.  They have nice graphics.

The iPhone Answer:  This is pretty much the same as using iTunes on your computer if you have the iTunes App on your phone.  Otherwise, you just need to plug your phone into your computer and sync the podcasts each week, which seems awkward.  Here’s another blow-by-blow from Ask Dave Taylor:

The Non-Apple Answer:  You’ll need an app for your phone or computer, basically.  Here’s a link to the Top 9 Android podcatching apps, for example:

Once you have the app on your phone or computer, just search for Slightly Burned Pants, subscribe and start downloading and listening.  Pretty simple.

The “On My Home Computer Without iTunes” Answer:  You’ll need to get a podcatcher program for your computer if you don’t use iTunes.  This is basically just like if you don’t have iTunes on your phone.  Enjoy!

The RSS Answer:  If you already know how to use Really Simple Syndication, then just click the RSS button and you’re good to go.  If you don’t, that’s another explanation for another time.

The Download Answer:  Right click the file and “Save Link As…” or “Save File As…” to your computer.  Simple!

The Streaming Answer:  Click the play button, turn up your speakers, sit back and enjoy.  Note that for this, you’ll have to go to each episodes page on this wonderful site and listen to them individually, and if you close your browser, you’ll have to start all over from the beginning.

You guys keep asking people to rate / review the podcast… um… how do I do that?

The Cool Answer:  Once you go to the iTunes store, and we can’t stress enough that in order to leave a rating or a review it needs to be from the ACTUAL iTUNES STORE, type in our name in the search engine.  When the first page comes up, click on our name AGAIN, to bring up the REAL page, that shows reviews, etc.  Below the episodes, you’ll see our current rating and a thing that says “Click To Rate”.  Click on the 5th star.  When you do, they’ll all light up and it’ll say “It’s Great!”. After you’re finished, it’ll say “Thanks!”.  That’s how easy it is to rate.

To leave a review, all you have to do is click “Write A Review”, which is just underneath the words “Customer Reviews”.  Follow the steps after that by giving it another 5-star (obviously, right?) rating and typing in some kind words, or, even just “Podcast Good”, as we suggested on the podcast in episode seven.  Submit it and then you’re good to go.  You don’t even have to use your real name.  Call yourself whatever you like.  The world is your oyster!

Ta-da!  See?!?  Super easy!  Thanks!

Anything we didn’t cover?  We hope this makes things easier for the folks that have been asking.  We hope this is a solid start for all the people out there that might want to listen but didn’t know how.

Now you don’t have any excuses! You have all the tools! Go forth into the world of podcasts and MAKE US PROUD!

LYLAS,

Murdock (Start listening to our Podcast now!)
