Rock N Roll’s Evil Doll

Today is the one year anniversary of the death of Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart. A moniker like that can move people to quickly dismiss you as a crank or a crackpot. An argument can be made that he was these things but you must also know that he was a person of intense creative energy.

This intense music doesn’t speak to me in the same way that Frank Zappa’s does, but there’s something about Beefheart’s music that makes me smile.  Below is my favorite song, “Bat Chain Puller” from Shiny Beast.  After that are some links to couple of obituaries that sum up his creative output better than I can.
